Hi, I'm the person behind Pretty Good Art — a painter who works in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, usually with paint on my hands and something good playing in the background.
How it started
I picked up a brush in my late twenties and never really put it down. What started as a weekend hobby turned into a full-blown obsession — the kind where you lose track of time and forget to eat lunch.
My work is rooted in observation: the way afternoon light pools on a windowsill, the particular green of a field just after rain, the quiet dignity of a face at rest. I'm drawn to the ordinary made luminous.
I work out of a small studio that smells permanently of linseed oil and coffee. It's a good smell.
How I work
Looking
Everything starts with looking — really looking. I sketch, photograph, and sit with a subject before I ever touch paint to canvas.
Layering
Whether it's oil, acrylic, or watercolor, I build in layers. Each one informs the next. Patience is the skill I'm always working on.
Knowing when to stop
The hardest part. A painting is done when it has what it needs — not necessarily everything I planned to give it.
What I use
Oils are my first love — slow, forgiving, endlessly reworkable. Acrylics when I want speed and boldness. Watercolor when I want to be humbled.
